The ability is unique in the ways it deals damage and thus has several special statuses to make it a flexible skill. You can focus entirely on Armor and Evasion, which is great for Tower Shields, Round Shields and Broaches. The ability has an additional critical chance from your shield’s Energy Shield, so you can increase your critical chance while also increasing damage by using a high-level Thorn Shield or Thorn Shield.
You can focus entirely on the critical chance to use a Spiritual Shield and rely entirely on additional damage. The ability has a large amount of additional damage that grows as it goes level, providing a decent raise that causes it to still deal damage even if the armor and evasion of its shield are low. It is worth noting that the skill does not benefit from unarmed bonuses or effects that benefit weapons.
The unique nature of using a shield for damage means you can use your primary hand weapon to achieve bonus properties, such as the attack speed of the Prismatic Eclipse or the additional rebound of the Ewar Mirage.
Speaking of ricochet, the ability has a number of interesting interactions with the various projectile modifiers available. Rebound causes both shield and shrapnel to ricochet, very good for huddled enemies when it hits them, but you lose control of where the shield will explode.
As it diffuses, shell shrapnel breaks into two shields as it strikes at enemies, resulting in two explosions of shrapnel. They will also spread, making you benefit from the broadcast twice!
Drilling does not apply to the initial projectile; This is to make the ability have a more reliable blast. The drilling applies to secondary projectiles, causing the new one to shatter each enemy into a large group.
Increasing projectile velocity will increase the distance that the shrapnel will travel, combining well with drilling to cause them to traverse larger groups.
Only the secondary projectile can be modified by adding projectiles, but the skill already has 8 additional projectiles, so additional projectiles are not requirements. Burst does not apply to Spectral Shield Casting.
